Does this trade make sense for the Oklahoma City Thunder?
What this trade comes down to for Oklahoma City is whether or not they favor owning the rights to four first-round picks in 2022 at the expense of picking up Davis Bertans’ contract or owning the rights to five first-round picks in 2023.
While they do get an extra second-round pick down the line, making Sam Presti very happy, this is not really a trade that would be worthwhile for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Bertans is 29-years-old now and does not fit the timeline that the Thunder have for their rebuild, nor is his contract favorable to them now or down the line. Cap space is not a problem for the Thunder right now, as they are currently below the salary cap floor for the season actually, but They will have some contract decisions to make in regards to Darius Bazley, Luguentz Dort and others soon.
Not only will they need to have cash funds available to retain these young guys, but they will also be looking to possibly add a star or two over the next couple of seasons to push their rebuilding process forward.

This trade with the Washington Wizards does absolutely nothing for the Thunder in terms of helping them grow as a young team, which is why they would be smart to stick with what they have for now.
