Washington Wizards Receive: WAS 2023 1st Round Pick (originally Lottery-Protected, via OKC)

Davis Bertans has virtually no value on the trade market right now and finding a team to take on the remaining four years of his contract is going to be a nightmare for the Wizards to do.

However, this is something they need to try and do because they cannot afford to tie themselves down to the remaining $65M on Bertan’s contract if they are to become real threats in the Eastern Conference.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have shown in the past that they are willing to take on bad contracts and with them being a few years out from being anything special, they could be willing to take on Bertans’ contract if they can receive a handful of added value.

Thunder GM Sam Presti is always willing to make a trade, especially if his team is on the receiving-end of draft picks. Presti has made a ton of deals over the years and as a result, he has compiled a total of 35 draft picks for the Thunder through 2028.

Oklahoma City’s rebuild process looks to be something special and while Davis Bertans likely would not be a big part of this, he would bring a first-round pick in 2022 and a future second-round pick with him to the Thunder in exchange for the Wizards’ 2023 first-round pick.

Currently owning the rights to Washington’s 2023 first-round pick, the Wizards and Thunder could work out terms that would allow for the Thunder to return the Wizards their draft pick in exchange for their one in 2022. Things can get confusing here, but theoretically, the details of this trade could be worked out from a draft pick standpoint.

In Washington, keeping Bradley Beal long-term is the main priority of this franchise right now, but they really do not make much of a compelling argument for themselves right now for why he should stay there.

He has gone through multiple rebuilds with the Wizards and they really are not in a position to be a real threat in the Eastern Conference. Getting another star to pair with Beal is essential, but the Wizards cannot do that unless they have available cap space.

Trading Davis Bertans this season may not return a star, but the Wizards would have plenty of cap space in the offseason to either make a big trade or go after a key free agent, while also retaining Bradley Beal on a new, long-term deal.
