One of the biggest surprises to this point in the 2021-22 NBA season has been the sudden rise of the young Cleveland Cavaliers, but injuries have not been kind to them on the year.

Not only did Collin Sexton go down with a torn meniscus in his left knee in November, but then Ricky Rubio suffered a torn left ACL at the end of December, ending his season prematurely. The breakout, All-Star-like season that Darius Garland has been having has definitely helped keep the Cavaliers afloat and they did recently trade for veteran Rajon Rondo for more backcourt depth, but GM Koby Altman is not done making moves yet.

Maybe the Cavaliers are not a true championship-level threat like they were in year’s past with LeBron James running the show, but this young Cavs team is hungry, they fight every single possession and they are a very tough team to matchup against given all the 7-footers they have in their starting rotation.

Currently 24-18 on the season and the 6-seed in the Eastern Conference, Cleveland has proven that they can fight against the best of the best in this league, which is why management is still looking for ways to add talent to their roster ahead of the trade deadline.

With Rubio out for the year, his $17.8M contract is definitely one that could be moved to bring in another playmaker or scorer, but there are other options for the Cavaliers as well. With some smaller, moveable contracts on their roster, the Cavaliers could theoretically leverage some bench talents for another impactful ball-handler and facilitator like Dennis Schroder.

The Boston Celtics signed Schroder to a one-year, $5.9M deal ahead of this season after the veteran guard failed to reach a long-term with any team in this league.

Having a lot to prove this season, Schroder has been really good in Boston and has stepped up time-and-time again with key guys like Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown being out of the rotation due to injuries.

Through 35 games, Schroder has averaged 16.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and has shot 43.7% from the floor, making him a really solid trade target for the Cavaliers to pair with Darius Garland in the backcourt.

Not being tied down to a long-term deal, the Cavaliers could basically “rent” Schroder for the rest of the season in attempts to make a real playoff push. Let’s take a look at what the Cleveland Cavaliers could look to offer the Boston Celtics for Dennis Schroder.
