What Will It Take For Cavaliers To Trade Collin Sexton?

Collin Sexton, Cleveland Cavaliers, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

The Cleveland Cavaliers are a top-six team in the Eastern Conference so far in the 2021-22 NBA season. They are 22-17 and right in the mix. The surprising part might be that the team has done it without Collin Sexton — or is it surprising?

Last season, there were trade rumors surrounding Sexton. There were allegedly disgruntled feelings around the point guard because of his high-volume shooting and inability to move the ball. Sexton remained n Cleveland this season and played just 11 games before suffering a torn meniscus. In those 11 games, Sexton was scoring 16 points and dishing out just 2.1 assists per game.

The absence of Sexton has not halted the progress of Cleveland. Darius Garland has stepped up in a big way. Garland is scoring 19.9 points per game and adding 7.3 assists. Jarrett Allen is contributing a double-double per game while Evan Mobley has proven to be the real deal during his rookie season. Even Kevin Love is back in the mix.

Ricky Rubio suffered a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season. This now puts two guards on the shelf this season. Will the Cavaliers still shop Sexton come the NBA trade deadline? They might not have a choice.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: What Will Cavaliers’ Collin Sexton’s Market Be After Injury?

First of all, the Cavaliers are playing better without him. That’s just a fact but financially, it makes sense. Sexton is a restricted free agent at the end of this season and is eligible for a rookie extension. Cleveland could make the qualifying offer to Sexton, which would be lucrative. Instead, Cleveland should target another perimeter threat for their 22-year-old point guard.

This is going to be a busy deadline. There are many wings that will be available and this is where Cleveland should be aggressive. Garland has stepped up as a legitimate point guard while the frontcourt is solidified.

Caris LeVert is a name that has been linked to the Cavaliers in recent weeks. Buddy Hield is also going to be available in a trade. There will be teams, like the Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings, that look to blow it up at the trade deadline. This is where Sexton could be thrown into a deal.

The emergence of Darius Garland makes Collin Sexton a bit easier to trade. Also, the power down low is how the Cleveland Cavaliers are built and that will continue. If they can add another playmaker in the backcourt, this might be a team that can hang around in the East. They are not title contenders just yet but there are some moves to be made that could improve the team right away.
