Would this trade make sense for the Brooklyn Nets?

The foundation of the Brooklyn Nets team was to have three superstars on the perimeter who can overwhelm the opposition with their talent. Right now, Kevin Durant and James Harden are getting the job done without Kyrie Irving but could use more help in some areas.

Having depth is more important than ever with how players are entering the NBA’s health and safety protocol in droves. Jalen Brunson and Kristaps Porzingis played at a high-level while Luka Doncic was been sidelined due to an ankle injury in addition to being one of the many players in the NBA’s health and safety protocol.

Over the last 10 games, Porzingis (22.8) and Brunson (21.0) are each averaging over 20 points per game. Brunson is also averaging 7.4 assists while Porzingis is adding averages of 8.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

The Nets could slot Brunson in at the point guard spot in the starting unit or coming off the bench while Porzingis could fill the starting center role. His ability to get to the rim could be of intrigue.

While Porzingis has shot the ball poorly this season, his shooting reputation would make guarding Kevin Durant and James Harden all the more daunting of a task within the half-court. His length could add a helpful shot blocking element for the Nets to funnel dribble penetration to throughout games.

There is also clearly the option for the Nets to just wait out the situation with the New York City vaccination mandate if they are content with Kyrie Irving just being an away game player in the playoffs. There also needs to be consideration about what next season could have in store with mandates, too.

New York City has arguably the strictest guidelines for COVID-19 response. Will they dial back mandates by the start of next season? It remains to be seen. If the Nets don’t want to keep playing this game, a trade for helpful contributors is justifiable.
