Buddy Hield – Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings really are like the Titanic. Every single season, they look new and ready to set sail on a new season, but always by midseason, they hit the iceberg that they should have seen coming!

This organization has not made the playoffs for 15 consecutive years and we might as well just make that number 16 now because their chances of making the playoffs are sinking fast.

The Kings are now 13-21 in the Western Conference and while they do have some talented players, they just simply do not look like a playoff-caliber team. It is absolutely possible that they could slip into the play-in tournament, but it is much more likely that they “sell” at the trade deadline.

Marvin Bagley III, Tristan Thompson, Alex Len, and Harrison Barnes are all rumored to be available in trade talks, but the most intriguing name on this roster is Buddy Hield. Since joining the Kings during the 2016-17 season, Hield has averaged 17.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and has shot 40.5% from three-point range.

The sharpshooting wing currently ranks second in the NBA in made threes on the season and he ranks second in points off-the-bench on the season. Buddy Hield is a terrific shooter and a “spark” off the bench, which is why the Grizzlies could really utilize him.

Memphis currently ranks sixth in the league in offensive rating and has a very balanced offensive attack, but they rank just 16th in the league in three-point shooting percentage. Adding another skilled shooter could greatly improve this team’s offense even more than it is and someone like Buddy Hield could open up a lot more space for guys like Morant and Brooks to get to the rim because of the attention he draws.

Making $22.4M this season and owd $61.5M through the end of the 2023-24 season, trading for Hield would definitely be a little tougher than imagine for the Grizzlies, but they do have some avenues to which they could acquire him.

Kyle Anderson and Tyus Jones are both key role players on the Grizzlies’ roster, but they are each in the final year of their respective contracts. Both of them combined to make about $17.5M this season and then Memphis could throw in Jarrett Culver as a young, former lottery pick in the trade since he is making $6.3M this season.

Right there, along with a draft pick or two, the Grizzlies would be sending out $23.9M in total salaries, allowing them to bring in Buddy Hield’s large contract with ease.

Maybe Memphis does not want to be tied down to a long-term contract like Buddy Hield’s, but he is definitely an impactful player that could work wonders for this team on the perimeter and off-the-bench.
