Does this trade make sense for the New York Knicks?

The Eastern Conference is loaded with talented playoff contenders this season and if the New York Knicks are to make the playoffs or the play-in tournament at this rate, they are going to need to add some kind of difference-maker to their roster.

Maybe they will look for ways to improve defensively since that is what Tom Thibodeau preaches to his team, but the idea of adding another low-post scorer makes the most sense for the Knicks.

This team hardly ever plays through their big men and while Julius Randle is their best scorer at the power-forward position, very rarely does he attack his opponents in the low-post. New York tends to move the ball on the perimeter and attack their opponents on the drive offensively, which is fine, but adding one of the best low-post scorers in the game would greatly open things up on the perimeter for guys like Barrett, Burks, Rose and others.

Domantas Sabonis is another guy the Knicks could run pick-and-roll sets with, but he would also take a lot of pressure off of Randle to have to do everything on offense because he is more than capable of being a “do-it-all” guy in the low-post.

Since the start of last season, Sabonis has recorded the 5th most triple-doubles in the league and so far this season, he is averaging 18.3 points, 11.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.1 steals and is shooting 59% from the floor.

His fit with Julius Randle would definitely be in question since they are both classified as power-forwards, but the Knicks could easily change their system to work with Sabonis being the “center”. Essentially, they could play a two-power-forward lineup and incorporate both big men playing off one another on the offensive end of the floor.

The Knicks need some kind of a “spark” to their rotation right now and while their defense has not been as good as it was last season, fixing their offense will solve a lot of problems this team currently has.

Obi Toppin, Mitchell Robinson, Kevin Knox and Kemba Walker is a lot of value to give up player-wise, but none of these four guys have really presented much in terms of winning right away this season.

Domantas Sabonis does present a means for winning a lot of games right away, which is why New York should make this trade and try to find ways to make this All-Star duo of Sabonis and Randle work out.
