Are Detroit Pistons Primed For Tank With Jerami Grant Injury?

The Detroit Pistons have been playing some low-level basketball this season. They are currently on a 12-game losing streak, which has pushed them to the worst record in the NBA at 4-22. They have the lowest winning percentage in the league and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel for when this ineptitude may end.

It is hard to imagine, but things could actually get worse for the Pistons in the coming weeks. Detroit is already 29th in offensive rating and 22nd in defensive rating according to Basketball-Reference. They are already the worst shooting team in the NBA, but it is going to become even more of a struggle offensively without Jerami Grant.

Grant, the team’s leading scorer at 20.1 points per game, is set to be sidelined for at least six weeks after suffering damage to the UCL on his right thumb. Detroit’s offense was already ugly with Grant as part of it. Without him, we could see some record-setting poor performances.

The organization knew that they were embarking on a rebuild as they have one of the youngest teams in the NBA. But, no one expected things to be this bad.

No professional player comes into a season trying to tank and lose games on purpose. The Pistons likely thought they could challenge for a Play-In Tournament spot, but things quickly unraveled.

They are 4-20 in games with Grant thus far this season and 0-2 without him. They weren’t trying to tank but were excelling at it with Grant in the lineup. Without him, the losses will likely continue piling up at an alarming rate.

After landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and selecting Cade Cunningham out of Oklahoma State, the Pistons are well on their way to having the No. 1 odds in the 2022 NBA Draft Lottery.

A lot of attention was on the Houston Rockets because of their 1-15 start about challenging the Charlotte Bobcats for the lowest winning percentage in a season. Without Jerami Grant and how the Detroit Pistons have looked, they could be the ones challenging that record.
