One Major Caveat For Any Team In Jerami Grant Trade

Jerami Grant, Detroit Pistons, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

The Detroit Pistons are going nowhere fast this season. Already having the lowest winning percentage in the NBA with a 4-22 record, things are likely going to get tougher with their best player, Jerami Grant, sidelined with an injury.

Grant is expected to miss at least six weeks because of damage to his right thumb. He was diagnosed with a right UCL sprain and will be re-evaluated at that time.

It is a big blow for the Pistons, who were already 29th in the NBA in offensive rating. Detroit is already the worst shooting team in the league and that is unlikely to improve with Grant sidelined. It would not be surprising to see them drop into last place without Grant, who was leading the team with 20.1 points per game.

Seeing as they were already struggling even with him on the court, could the Pistons entertain the idea of trading him away? He is reportedly one of the most sought-after players on the trade market right now with the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers being two of the teams pursuing him.

It may be difficult to negotiate a deal involving Grant since he is sidelined now, but at least it is not a catastrophic injury. With his hand being injured, he can at least do some running and conditioning drills to stay in shape so that his return isn’t delayed longer than it needs to be.

There is also one other hurdle to jump when it comes to acquiring Grant; his contract. It is something that The Athletic, a paid-subscription website, detailed recently.

“Grant has one season remaining on his deal after this campaign and is eligible for a four-year extension worth up to $112 million in the offseason. Interested teams understand Grant will command most of his maximum salary in an extension next summer, a scenario similar to when the Nuggets made the trade for Magic forward Aaron Gordon with a significant interest to complete a subsequent extension when the sides were eligible to negotiate.”

Grant is currently playing out a three-year deal worth just over $60 million. While the Pistons haven’t done much winning with him on the team, he has proven that he is worthy of a raise with his performance on the court.

The Syracuse product is a versatile forward that can fill numerous roles for a team. He has shown he can be an elite role player with the Denver Nuggets or a go-to player that can create offense with the Detroit Pistons.

Acquiring him likely won’t be cheap, as the organization loves him and he likes being a Piston. But, given the current state of the franchise, it may be difficult to turn down trade packages for Jerami Grant with how high his value currently is.
