The Indiana Pacers may be heading toward something they have never done before; going into a full rebuild. Team governor Herb Simon has reportedly ‘gotten onboard with the idea of a rebuild’ and there could be some major changes to the roster ahead of the NBA trade deadline.

Indiana is in a tough spot. They are 11-16 and in 13th place in what has turned into a very competitive Eastern Conference. What looks like a roster that has stagnated and without a star player, the Pacers could make multiple trades.

All-Star Domantas Sabonis, Myles Turner and Caris LeVert were all mentioned as possible trade candidates. All three would have varying levels of interest around the league but should bring back a solid package for the Pacers to begin their rebuild with.

While he may not be the most sought-after of the three, given his style of play, Sabonis would likely net the Pacers the most in a return package. Only 25-years old and with an All-Star appearance in two consecutive years, there is a lot to like.

While he is not a highly-regarded defender, Sabonis is an excellent rebounder, averaging 12+ rebounds for the third consecutive season. He can also be the centerpiece of an offensive scheme given his playmaking ability.

While his 3-point shooting is still a work in progress, his scoring average had increased every season of his career before this one. This season Sabonis has seen his opportunities offensively shrink, spending more time on the perimeter without the ball in his hands. But, he is making the most of those chances with the highest effective field goal percentage, 60.3, of his career.

So, which team could be interested in acquiring him? Maybe the Oklahoma City Thunder, who selected him 11th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. He spent the first season of his career with them before being traded to the Pacers as part of the Paul George blockbuster.

Here is what Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report had to say about the Thunder being a possible suitor for Sabonis.

“While the Thunder appear to be a patient franchise, the team certainly has enough assets to make a play for Sabonis. Be it their long list of upcoming draft picks and prospects like Aleksej Pokusevski, Darius Bazley and Theo Maledon (among others), Oklahoma City could find the opportunity to add a young All-Star worth the change in course.”

Eventually, the Thunder are going to have to start trying to win some games. They have one cornerstone in guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander but nothing else that would be considered a long-term building block, at least not yet.

Pairing Domantas Sabonis with Gilgeous-Alexander would provide the Oklahoma City Thunder with two cornerstones to build the team around. Getting SGA some help offensively would help the team win some more games as he is the only consistent scoring threat the team currently has.

With a boatload of draft picks and some intriguing young players on the roster, Oklahoma City has the assets to put together a package that could garner the Indiana Pacers’ attention.
