Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Adding Pascal Siakam at the expense of Smart and Horford would take away a little bit of Boston’s limited depth, but this trade would form a new “Big 3” in the Eastern Conference that could contend for a title for at least the next three seasons.

Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Pascal Siakam are all under contract through the 2023-24 season and if they were committed to playing together long-term, then they could theoretically play in Boston with one another for the next decade.

Siakam is only 27-years-old and with Tatum (23) and Brown (25) being young, this trio in the Eastern Conference would be a very tough group to stop because of how well they could adapt to one another.

All three guys are extremely athletic players and given that they are all two-way threats, all of Boston’s weaknesses right now would be solved. Obviously depth would be a problem with Josh Richardson, Grant Williams and Payton Pritchard being their three best bench threats, but the Celtics would still have some trade exceptions to utilize after making this trade.

If they can get their hands on Pascal Siakam, the Celtics should be willing to make this trade, but at the same time, losing Marcus Smart really thins out their backcourt, especially with Dennis Schroder being on a one-year “loan” type of deal.

Seeing as Marcus Smart just signed a big extension in the offseason, he cannot be traded until January 25, so Boston does have a lot of time to think this trade over should they actually want to trade for Siakam.
