Does this trade make sense for the Atlanta Hawks?

Moving John Collins, Danilo Gallinari, Cam Reddish, and a first-round pick this year for Karl-Anthony Towns is not a terrible move, but it could end up throwing off the Atlanta Hawks chemistry. Atlanta had a really good thing going for them last year and while they have started off slow this year, they should not be eager to tear down everything they have built.

With depth at every position right now and one of the best point guards in the league in Trae Young, the Hawks could definitely make a deep playoff run once again. If Gallinari continues to struggle, we could see Atlanta try to move him in the near future, but moving Collins and Reddish does not seem smart right now.

John Collins means too much to this team in the frontcourt and he has built a really strong relationship with Trae Young through the years. As for Cam Reddish, they currently need him because De’Andre Hunter is out indefinitely after undergoing wrist surgery.

With Hunter out, Reddish is going to continue to step into a bigger role with this team, which could increase his solo value tremendously ahead of February’s trade deadline. As for acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns, the biggest question facing the Hawks is how he would fit in next to Clint Capela.

Atlanta has really liked the production Capela has given them as a shot-blocking and rebounding center who thrives on the other side of the court in pick-and-roll situations with Trae Young. They even extended Clint Capela’s contract this offseason for two more years, meaning that he is under contract through the 2024-25 season.

Karl-Anthony Towns could hypothetically play the power-forward situation next to Capela and form one of the league’s more dominant frontcourts, but this does not really seem like a good fit. Capela is a great center because of his ability to move around in the paint and with Towns by his side, he would be limited to one side of the floor both on offense and defense.

This lessens Capela’s overall value to the Atlanta Hawks and would change their game plan tremendously. The idea of adding Karl-Anthony Towns sounds great for the Hawks, but there is just no reason for them to pursue this trade. Atlanta is built to win now and for the future, which is why they would be smart to not pursue any franchise-altering trades.
