The San Antonio Spurs are currently stuck in the dreaded middle land of the NBA. They have one of the greatest coaches in the history of the league in Gregg Popovich, so you know they aren’t going to tank. But, at the same time, they aren’t good enough to compete.

So, they are stuck in that middle trying to decide what direction they want to take. Based on their moves this offseason, they don’t seem to know which way they want to go either.

With their first-round pick, the Spurs selected guard Joshua Primo out of Alabama. Primo was the youngest prospect in this year’s draft class and plays the same position as two of their better players in Dejounte Murray and Derrick White.

With his selection, it was fair to believe the Spurs would be retooling this offseason. None of their veteran free agents, DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills, and Rudy Gay, re-signed. A retooling seemed likely, but then they signed Doug McDermott and Zach Collins in free agency.

McDermott agreed to a three-year, $42 million deal, while Collins signed a three-year, $22 million deal. A bit of head-scratching deals, but for different reasons.

Not looking like contenders, committing $42 million to a player that is pretty limited to 3-point shooting is eye-brow raising. Committing any money to a player with the injury history of Collins, regardless of upside, is also curious.

Let’s take a look at what a hypothetical trade between the Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs centered around Ben Simmons could look like.
