The Dallas Mavericks’ biggest moves this NBA offseason came in changing some of their leadership. Long-time members of the organization, Donnie Nelson in the front office and Rick Carlisle as head coach, moved on this offseason.
They were replaced by Nico Harrison and Jason Kidd, respectively. The roster, meanwhile, didn’t undergo any drastic changes.
The team kicked around the tires on trying to trade Kristaps Porzingis, but nothing came to fruition. Reggie Bullock and Sterling Brown were both signed, but they were unable to land that secondary ball-handler they were seeking to take some pressure off of Luka Doncic.
Could a deal still be made in the coming weeks that will fill that need? If Dallas finds someone they like, they could use Dwight Powell as a trade chip to get the deal done.

Powell doesn’t provide eye-popping stats for the Dallas Mavericks, but he is a steady performer that gets the job done. He is efficient offensively, has some versatility on the defensive end of the court, and is a solid rebounder.
While the Mavericks have an affinity for him, one NBA executive could see them trading Powell if it meant getting another piece they needed.
“I know he pops on a lot of the analytics models,” one NBA executive told HoopsHype. “Dallas likes him, but his injury history hasn’t been the best. I could definitely see Dallas moving him to try and get another piece.”
Powell is signed through 2023 at just over $11 million each season. With the depth they have at the center position, Dallas could deal from a position of strength to help improve another area of the roster.

Boban Marjanovic, Willie Cauley-Stein, and Moses Brown provide the team with good depth. Kristaps Porzingis can also slide over to the center spot, along with Maxi Kleber, giving the Dallas Mavericks more than enough to handle the loss of Powell should a deal come about that they like enough to pull the trigger on.
