It is not very often that the Oklahoma City Thunder are mentioned as a potential NBA free-agent destination. The organization has made it abundantly clear what their plans are with the transactions they have made recently.

Oklahoma City is rebuilding and collecting as many assets as possible. Sam Presti has stockpiled draft picks like they were going out of style as the Thunder have almost too many selections in the next five years.

Eventually, they are going to have to turn those assets into something that can help them on the court. It is nice having assets and flexibility, but ultimately, you need to find pieces that fit together and can win some games.

Oklahoma City has one foundational piece in place currently. Guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a budding star and the face of the franchise. The Thunder are hoping some of their younger players can emerge as building blocks as well in the coming seasons. Could another guard be on the way this offseason?

LATEST NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Inside Collin Sexton’s Failed Contract Talks With Cavaliers

According to sources, the Oklahoma City Thunder are intrigued by the idea of pairing Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Collin Sexton with Gilgeous-Alexander in their backcourt. Sexton is one of the 2018 first-round picks that we’re unable to work out a rookie extension, making him a restricted free agent this upcoming offseason.

Rumors have swirled about the Cavaliers’ interest level in locking Sexton up long-term. He was on the trade block earlier in the offseason, but general manager Koby Altman has said they want to keep him. An extension wasn’t worked out, so it is anyone’s guess if Cleveland wants to keep him long-term.

If they do, the Thunder are now one team that they will have to compete with when free agency begins in July. In addition to Oklahoma City, the Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Pelicans are two more teams that could outbid the Cleveland Cavaliers for Sexton’s services.
