Can the Spurs make a trade with the 76ers work?

Bringing in Ben Simmons gives the Spurs a young All-Star to build around for years to come, but giving up Dejounte Murray and Derrick White is a ton of value to sacrifice.

Neither Murray nor White will likely be All-Stars and they do not have the athleticism/potential Simmons still has, but there is no reason why Murray and White both cannot be with this Spurs organization for at least the next 5-6 years as key contributors. 

In fact, they are both two of the few faces of this franchise since they do not really have anybody else! These two guards along with Keldon Johnson and free-agent signing Doug McDermott are the top players on this roster right now, which is why trading them could be devastating to the future of the Spurs. 

Targeting a guy like Ben Simmons in a trade could be advantageous, but it could also cost the Spurs two really great backcourt pieces that could help them become playoff threats once again.

The San Antonio Spurs have a solid foundation in place already and are going to continue to develop the other young talents around Murray and White, which is why this trade with the 76ers may not actually work even though the Spurs can theoretically make this trade. 

For Philadelphia, they would not be getting the “All-Star-level” talent they want for Simmons, but no team in the league is going to pay this price tag a week before the new season begins. The 76ers have two choices in front of them as an organization right now.

They can either bet on Ben Simmons to return to the team within the next few weeks or they can trade him now for less value. Either way, it seems like Philadelphia has already lost in this situation.
