Why Malcolm Brogdon Is The Perfect Trade Targets

Arguably the most important thing that Malcolm Brogdon brings is that he can play the point guard position. Without Ben Simmons, the Philadelphia 76ers would be void of a starting-caliber option to run their offense.

They would be left with a combination of Seth Curry, Shake Milton, Tyrese Maxey, and rookie Jaden Springer to be the starting point guard. That would be a drastic drop-off from Simmons, but Brogdon would be able to capably fill that hole.

The former Virginia product is also an excellent defender. He doesn’t offer the same versatility that Simmons does, but if we are being honest, virtually no one does.

But, Malcolm Brogdon can hold his own and has the size to defend either backcourt spot. Standing 6’5” with a 6’11” wingspan, Brogdon can even defend some wing players if Doc Rivers elects to go with perimeter-orientated lineups.

Offensively, Brogdon would be a massive upgrade over Ben Simmons. Indiana may have concerns over Brogdon’s long-term outlook as a starting point guard, but he is a strong playmaker, averaging 6.5 assists per game in two seasons as the starting point guard with the Indiana Pacers.

His scoring ability is what would help take the 76ers to another level. Brogdon is an efficient scorer, as he made the illustrious 50/40/90 club during the 2018-19 season with the Milwaukee Bucks.

His efficiency dropped a little bit with the Pacers as he shouldered more of the scoring load, but the Philadelphia 76ers would love to have his willingness to take shots. He averaged a career-high 21.2 points per game last season, providing Philadelphia with some of the perimeter scoring punch they have sorely missed.

Given how things have gone thus far in negotiations centered around Simmons, the 76ers would probably be lucky to get a player of Malcolm Brogdon’s caliber in return for him.

His value is at an all-time low and no team is going to pony up the kind of offer that Morey and the 76ers are hoping to land.

Getting a borderline All-Star as the centerpiece of a deal this close to the start of the 2021-22 season should be considered a win for the Philadelphia 76ers. They could now focus on the court and pursue that elusive championship with Joel Embiid as the focal point of the team.
