This Spurs-Timberwolves Trade Is Headlined By Thaddeus Young

The San Antonio Spurs are stuck in the dreaded middle-ground of the NBA. They are too good to really be in the running for the No. 1 pick in the draft, but they are not good enough to be true contenders once the postseason rolls around.

As a result, San Antonio was open for business this offseason. All of their veterans, Patty Mills, DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay, signed elsewhere this offseason. The team, peculiarly, signed Doug McDermott and Zach Collins to deals worth $64 million.

McDermott is a nice player, but for a team that might be closer to rebuilding than competing, it was a head-scratching move. Handing $22 million to the oft-injured Collins makes even less sense unless San Antonio is convinced he can stay healthy and they will develop him into the player everyone thought he could be when the Portland Trail Blazers selected him.

Allowing their veterans to walk will open up playing time for some of the younger players on the roster. In the case of DeRozan, they were even able to get some pieces back via a sign-and-trade with the Chicago Bulls.

Chicago signed DeRozan to a three-year, $85 million deal and traded Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a future first-round pick, and two future second-round picks to San Antonio. That is quite a haul for the Spurs, as the draft picks will aid their rebuild.

Flipping Young again could as well. He has a spot in the Spurs’ frontcourt for as long as he is with the team, but the organization would likely receive a solid package in return for him as well.

Plenty of teams would love to add the veteran to their roster. One possible landing spot could be the Minnesota Timberwolves.
