How This Trade Impacts Charlotte Hornets
The Charlotte Hornets appear to have signed Kelly Oubre Jr. for a combination of reasons with the top being they were a team with a lot of financial flexibility late in free agency. Without a landing spot, Oubre Jr. needed to take a deal with a team he could land a solid role.
If the fit doesn’t end up being sufficient for Oubre Jr. and the Hornets, a trade could help both sides. Charlotte would have used Oubre Jr.’s contract as a mechanism to salary match midseason to add a piece or two that can be cleaner fits in smaller roles.
In this particular NBA trade scenario, the Dallas Mavericks would send Dwight Powell and Maxi Kleber, both of whom are helpful contributors as complementary talents.
The Hornets would have little issues bringing both off the bench in the frontcourt or to provide a different look if they need that at times.

Kleber is the main draw as he’s an efficient perimeter shooter that can pick-and-pop while also having the foot speed to stick with wing matchups on defense. His versatility isn’t an easy combination to find in a role player at the four spot, particularly with his size.
