G League Ignite Standout

Given the circumstance of the pandemic, the NBA and the G-League were forced to play in “bubble” atmospheres, limiting the games Jonathan Kuminga and other top recruits in the G-League had to prove their abilities ahead of the 2021 NBA Draft.

For the new G-League Ignite team, Jonathan Kuminga was really versatile and showcased his athleticism. In 13 games, the young forward averaged 15.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and shot 38.7% from the floor, showcasing the potential he had every single time he stepped out on the court.

As a result, Jonathan Kuminga began to draw a lot of “buzz” around the league from many scouts and the 18-year-old began to fly up many team’s draft boards in preparation for the 2021 NBA Draft, which took place in July.

While many did like his athleticism and potential, Jonathan Kuminga was still a very raw prospect and some of the teams picking near the top of the draft were not as high on him as a result. The Pistons took Cade Cunningham first overall, followed by the Rockets taking Jalen Green second overall, and then the Cavaliers selected Evan Mobley third overall.

Jonathan Kuminga began falling down in the draft a little bit, even though he was regarded as a Top-5 talent in terms of potential and athleticism, but he did not fall past 7th overall, as the Golden State Warriors selected him with one of their two lottery picks.
