The San Antonio Spurs were part of one of the bigger trades this NBA offseason. The team decided against re-signing any of their veteran players that were free agents, including DeMar DeRozan, the team’s leading scorer and assist man from the 2020-21 NBA season.

There was a lot of speculation during the offseason that DeRozan could take a significant pay cut if it meant playing for a contending team. Rumors were floating that he could take a mid-level exception or veteran’s minimum for the chance to win a title.

Those rumors proved to be false, as DeRozan cashed in. He signed a three-year, $85 million deal with the Chicago Bulls. The transaction was finalized as a sign-and-trade deal between the two teams.

In the swap, the Spurs landed Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a future first-round pick, and two future second-round selections. Since that trade has been completed the Spurs have been a part of even more trade rumors.
