Balances Out Roster
The addition of DeAndre Jordan is one that many people will criticize. He did not play well with the Brooklyn Nets last season and was removed from the rotation once the postseason rolled around.
Frank Vogel is hopeful that he can extract some production from him, as his skill set is a good fit for what the Lakers are looking for. With Marc Gasol’s future up in the air, Jordan also provides them with some insurance at the position.
On the court, Jordan will also help them balance out the roster. Jordan’s lack of floor spacing will not be as detrimental if he is coming off the bench alongside shooters in Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington, or Malik Monk.
Even if Anthony Davis is willing to play more center this season, it is not something the Lakers should do too much during the regular season. They want him fresh and ready to go when it counts the most in the postseason.

So, having centers that can play alongside Davis is imperative for the duration of the regular season. Jordan provides a second big-bodied option that will allow Davis to play power forward, which he prefers to do.
