Boston Celtics Receive: F Thaddeus Young
San Antonio Spurs Receive: G/F Romeo Langford, F Grant Williams, BOS 2023 1st Round Pick (Lottery-Protected)
The Phoenix Suns are definitely going to be a team to watch in a potential Thaddeus Young trade, but what about the Boston Celtics? Brad Stevens has done a great job of adding more talent to this roster this offseason and he has been aggressive with his moves, so it is not crazy to think that they cap off their offseason by adding another veteran frontcourt talent like Young.
With Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown being their two young leaders, plus secondary talents in Marcus Smart, Al Horford, Josh Richardson, Dennis Schroder, Robert Williams and Enes Kanter, the Boston Celtics definitely have a much stronger looking team than they did last season, but they could still benefit from adding another frontcourt talent.
Both Grant Williams and Bruno Fernando are nothing more than bench players on this roster and Jayson Tatum really is now a true power-forward, so if Williams/Kanter/Horford were to get injured, the Celtics would all of a sudden be thin at the power-forward/center positions.
The best part about adding Thad Young to their roster from the Celtics’ point of view is the fact that they could absorb his contract rather easily, even though they are over the tax line already.

The Celtics have a $17.1M trade exception that was created when they executed a sign-and-trade with the New York Knicks involving Evan Fournier, so they could absorb Thaddeus Young’s $14.2M contract for the 2021-22 season.
San Antonio not only gets a future first-round pick that should convey in 2023, but they would also get two young talents in Romeo Langford and Grant Williams to add to their roster in a rebuilding year.

Both guys are on their rookie contracts and the Spurs would not be tied down to them long-term, so they would essentially get a chance to add two key rotational players, assuming both can stay healthy. This is definitely not the worst thing for the Spurs, especially since there is value to be had from this deal with the Celtics.
