Does this trade make sense for the New Orleans Pelicans?
The New Orleans Pelicans have to do something that will get the franchise back into the postseason. Zion Williamson has only been with the organization for two seasons, but the fact there are already rumors of his family wanting him to leave is not good.
David Griffin has to get aggressive in filling the roster out around him. Surrendering a player only turning 24 with one All-Star game appearance under his belt already in Brandon Ingram isn’t easy to do, but it would be necessary to land a star such as Damian Lillard.
The combination of Lillard and Williamson would terrify opponents. Williamson is as dominant of a player in the NBA on the interior, so having a player of Lillard’s caliber drawing defenses away would open up even more lanes for him to attack the basket.
Williamson’s presence in the paint would also draw attention from opponents, giving Lillard more space on the perimeter as well. Lillard is already a lights-out shooter, so giving him even a half-second of more space could be deadly.

Those two alone would be enough to make the Pelicans contenders in the playoffs. While Ingram is a great player in his own right, he does not have the cache or pull that someone like Lillard does. Griffin and the front office would find it a lot easier to get players to come to New Orleans with two stars of that caliber already on the roster.
