Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?

The San Antonio Spurs entered a crossroads this offseason. The team missed the playoffs for consecutive years for the first time in franchise history, meaning a roster shakeup was on the horizon. With veterans DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay entering free agency, the team was starting down a rebuild.

DeRozan was signed and traded to the Chicago Bulls, as San Antonio received Thaddeus Young, a future first-round pick and two second-round picks in exchange for DeRozan.

Gay signed with the Utah Jazz, but the Spurs also added another future second-round pick, along with Chandler Hutchinson, taking part in the 5-team trade that included the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets.

Picking up some extra draft capital, it makes sense for San Antonio to parlay some of that into an All-Star such as Ben Simmons. San Antonio needs a new face of the franchise and Simmons could provide that.

At 25-years old, Simmons already has an impressive resume, but there is potential for so much more. There aren’t many organizations better at developing players than San Antonio. Getting their hands on a player that is already a multiple-time All-Star and All-Defensive Team member would be bad news for the rest of the NBA.

With so much intriguing, young talent on the roster, Simmons can help elevate that group and help lead the next era of Spurs basketball.
