1. Opens Up More Minutes For Younger Players
Having some veterans on the roster is useful when a team is rebuilding. But, the Houston Rockets are still in asset collection mode; they aren’t going to be winning many games this season. So, there is no real need for a player such as John Wall other than to help the team reach the salary floor.
However, even if he is bought out, Wall’s contract will still count toward their books. So, he would still be helping them hit the salary floor but not soaking up minutes in the backcourt that could go to some of their younger players.
This offseason alone the Rockets added two prospects to their backcourt. With the second pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Houston selected Jalen Green from the G League Ignite. With the 24th pick, they selected Josh Christopher out of Arizona State.
Those two players, along with Kevin Porter Jr., should build the foundation of the Rockets’ future. Giving them as many minutes as they can handle would be great for their development. Expanding their repertoires to include initiating some offense will only make them better down the road as well.

With a veteran point guard in D.J. Augustin already on the roster, buying out Wall to create the extra minutes in the backcourt is even more viable. Augustin is more than capable of handling starter’s minutes at the beginning of the season and eventually ceding more and more playing time to the youngsters as the season goes on.
