Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
Trading Dejounte Murray is something the San Antonio Spurs have thought about doing this offseason, but I believe they were just making him “available” to see what his value was league-wide. The Spurs should have no intentions of trading Murray because he is now one of the faces of their core, not just their young core!
Derrick White, Lonnie Walker IV, Keldon Johnson and Dejounte Murray are the three young, experienced guys on the Spurs roster and the three focal points that they will look to build around/with now that DeMar DeRozan and the other veterans in San Antonio are out of the picture.
Giving up on Murray now would be a huge mistake for the Spurs, especially since his value is not as high as it can be. If they want to leverage him at some point moving forward, the best time to do so would be at the trade deadline over the next few years since he is going to be a focal point in the Spurs’ offensive attack.
Next to DeMar DeRozan this past year, Dejounte Murray was the Spurs second leading scorer, so there is no doubt in my mind that he can lead this team in scoring during the course of the 2021-22 season. If he puts up better numbers on both ends of the court than he did last year, Murray’s value will continue increasing and the Spurs could leverage him for even more and better assets than they could get now.

Ultimately, the Spurs have no need to trade away Dejounte Murray, which is why they likely will not. Marcus Smart, Romeo Langford and a first-round pick next year is a solid amount of value for the Spurs to take back in a trade involving Murray, but there is no immediate need to make a trade like this, which is why they will not make a trade like this.
