Does this trade make sense for the Houston Rockets?
Any trade in which the Houston Rockets can unload Eric Gordon this offseason makes sense for them and especially here with the Suns since they get assets in return. Jalen Smith and Jevon Carter are definitely two younger players Houston could look to utilize in their rotations moving forward and they fit the mold of being young players that can contribute to a rebuild.
Not to mention, the Rockets could hypothetically add a fourth first-round pick in this year’s draft, giving them the ability to potentially move up and get another high draft pick. In a perfect world or in NBA 2K, this trade can be done, but in the real world, the Suns are having no part of this trade.
Eric Gordon is a veteran player who can still contribute at a relatively high-level, but his contract is too much for a team like the Suns to take on. Phoenix is already close to $13M over the salary cap before this year’s draft and they have contract situations with Chris Paul, Cameron Payne and others to deal with.
These situations take precedent over trying to trade for other guys, especially since Paul and Payne were instrumental in Phoenix reaching the NBA Finals this year. The thought of trading for Eric Gordon is definitely intriguing for the Suns, but they just simply do not have the cap space to feasibly make this trade work given that they want to retain as many players from this year’s roster as possible.

For Houston though, they are actively looking to trade Eric Gordon and it should not be shocking to see him moved within the coming weeks. The Houston Rockets are rebuilding right now and Gordon is no longer important to their success moving forward.
