Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
Adding Kyle Lowry to their roster definitely makes sense and not only would they benefit by doing so, but they would benefit greatly by moving the contracts of Josh Richardson and Dwight Powell. The Mavs traded for Richardson last offseason in a deal that sent Seth Curry to Philadelphia and Dallas may be kicking themselves over this trade.
Seth Curry shined in Philadelphia this past year while Josh Richardson was very underwhelming for the Mavericks. Richardson played in 59 games averaging 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and shooting just 33% from three-point range. He is a solid one-on-one perimeter defender, but overall, the 27-year-old wing is not much of a difference-maker for the Dallas Mavericks.
The same can be said for Dwight Powell, who is still trying to work his way back to full strength since suffering an Achilles injury in January 2020. Powell played in 58 games this year, averaging just 5.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and shooting 61.9% from the floor.
Finishing around the rim is a speciality of Dwight Powell’s and he had success doing so during the 2020-21 season, but Willie Cauley-Stein and Boban Marjanovic surpassed him on the teams depth chart near the end of the regular season and in the playoffs.
Trading Powell and his $22.1M contract over the next two seasons definitely works in favor of the Mavericks and frees up some cap space moving forward that they will need to offer Luke Doncic a max-contract extension.

There really is nothing not to like about this sign-and-trade for Kyle Lowry, which is why they should not hesitate to pull-the-trigger on acquiring Lowry if he wants to come to Dallas.
The Mavericks need another impactful player to take the next step in the Western Conference, which is exactly why they need a guy like Kyle Lowry in their rotations.
