Does this trade make sense for the Cleveland Cavaliers?
Jordan Poole and Kevon Looney could definitely carve out roles on a young Cleveland Cavaliers team and the 7th overall pick could definitely bring in yet another valuable, young player, but the Cavaliers would be foolish to trade Collin Sexton at this time, even if there are rumblings in trade rumors around the NBA.
They are in a tough spot financially since they do not want to go over or near the hard cap since they are not a playoff threat, but keeping Collin Sexton long-term seems like the most logical thing for this organization to do. For three seasons now, Sexton has been their best player and has only been getting better, which is why they need to keep the 22-year-old guard.
Cleveland has made a lot of mistakes in the past of getting rid of young talents on the rise, which is why they cannot afford to make the same mistake. Poole and Looney are solid players, but they are not going to be difference-makers in terms of this team making the playoffs.
Adding the 7th pick in the draft to go along with their 3rd pick definitely brings a lot of value to Cleveland, but are they going to be able to get two guys who can out produce what Sexton has done over the years? The idea of trading away Sexton to try and land Cade Cunningham definitely exists, but if they want to make this trade with Detroit so bad, they should just trade Collin Sexton to the Pistons.

Cut out the middleman and just deal Sexton to the Detroit Pistons instead of playing games with a bunch of different teams to acquire picks. The Pistons have fielded calls for the No. 1 overall pick, but it is widely speculated that they are not going to be trading this pick, which is why Cleveland’s focus should be on their team at hand.
They have a good thing going with Darius Garland and Collin Sexton in their backcourt, which is why tearing down what they have built over the last three years does not make sense. Cap space is a problem and Kevin Love’s contract definitely does not help the situation, but the Cavaliers must keep Collin Sexton long-term if they are to possibly become a playoff threat over the next few seasons.
