Boston Celtics Receive: G Dejounte Murray

San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Marcus Smart, F Aaron Nesmith and No. 45 pick

Dejounte Murray would be the lone player going back to the Boston Celtics in this deal. He would solidify the backcourt and give them that option at the top of the offense.

After the Kemba Walker trade, the Celtics must find a long-term answer at the point guard position. The idea would be that Murray could fill that role with his defensive impact along with his playmaking as the initiator of the half-court offense.

The Spurs would not land a massive haul in return. Marcus Smart would take over as a replacement for Murray as he enters the final year of his current contract. San Antonio would gain more long-term financial flexibility as a result.

The Spurs also get a second-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft along with Aaron Nesmith, who was the No. 14 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He did not have much opportunity in his rookie season on a team loaded with wing talent but is a sharpshooter.

If the Spurs are not sold on Dejounte Murray as a long-term answer as the starting point guard, capitalizing on his trade value now makes a lot of sense. If remaining competitive is the goal, then this is a trade package that offers that and a little more.

Let’s take a closer look and see how this NBA trade scenario centered around Dejounte Murray would benefit both the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs.
