Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
The Dallas Mavericks need to get Luka Doncic some more help. Kristaps Porzingis has proven to be too unreliable of a sidekick for him and Dallas needs to rectify that. While they will never get back the same value for him that they acquired him for from the New York Knicks, Walker isn’t a bad consolation prize.
While the team is hopeful that they can flip Kristaps Porzinigs into a bigger prize, the trade interest in him is minimal. So, getting Walker, who the Oklahoma City Thunder are looking to flip and won’t require a big trade package for, would be a good backup plan.
When healthy Walker can provide the Mavericks with the scoring punch and shot creation are two things that the Mavericks would certainly be interested in adding. It would take some of the pressure off of Doncic’s shoulders.
Walker also has one year fewer on his deal, giving the Mavericks some potential salary relief in the future. While Porzingis’ deal for the 2023-24 season is a player option, it seems unlikely at this point he would decline that.

The addition of Kemba Walker would give the team some insurance as well if the team decides they are going to be unable to retain Jalen Brunson in free agency next season and flip him in a trade at some point.
