Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

Adding Lonzo Ball would not only give the Mavericks another offensive threat, but give them a guard who plays quite well actually defensively as well. Lonzo Ball really is like a swiss-army knife in the sense that he can do a little bit of everything for his team.

This type of offseason addition would definitely be valuable to the Mavericks, but at the same time, bringing in Lonzo Ball on a new, long-term, high-paying contract really does not make much sense for Dallas. Ball is not an All-Star caliber player and is pretty much the best version of himself already, which is why they should not make this trade with the Pelicans.

With just under $21M in cap space this offseason, the Mavs should not only look to bring back Tim Hardaway Jr., but they should look for ways to try and add more talent over the next few years. This roster is still a long ways away from being a championship contending team, which is why bringing in Lonzo Ball does not really do anything for them from a playoffs perspective.

The Mavs need more All-Star talents to pair with Luka Doncic and being tied down to Porzingis really does not help them. Having Kristaps Porzingis on a large, long-term contract, as well as now potentially having Lonzo Ball on one as well, the Mavericks would be pretty tied down financially in terms of what they could do to add talent moving forward.

Not to mention, Luka Doncic is going to be up for a mega contract extension soon, which is another reason why Dallas should not tie themselves down financially. The Dallas Mavericks are in a tough position right now as a franchise because of their cap situation and bringing in Lonzo Ball does not help their cause.
