Why This Trade Makes Perfect Sense For The Lakers
For the Lakers, a transaction for Derick White probably isn’t at the forefront of their plans. This trade falls short of landing the superstar many are hoping for, such as Damian Lillard. However, this trade does fill a few needs for the team.
Following the trade for Anthony Davis, the Lakers have very few draft assets. Landing a second round pick in this year’s class allows them to add another young player to the roster or flip it in another trade to acquire another veteran player.
In White, the Lakers would be getting a replacement for Dennis Schroder should he opt to leave in free agency. He would be a strong fit in the starting lineup as a player capable of knocking down 3-point shots, connecting on 35.7 percent of his attempts in his career.
The Lakers have been connected to guard Spencer Dinwiddie, and White provides them a similar skill set but with better perimeter shooting, something the team desperately needs. White is also a capable playmaker, giving the Lakers another player alongside James that can initiate their offense.
The only downside to White is that he has struggled with some injuries during his four-year career. That is why they would be receiving a second-round pick in this scenario to sweeten the deal for them.
Kyle Kuzma is arguably the biggest trade chip the Lakers have to offer in trade packages this offseason. However, given his propensity to disappear at times in big spots, the market for him could be quiet, so landing a player of White’s caliber would be a win.
