The San Antonio Spurs had a franchise first occur this NBA season. The 2020-21 season was the second consecutive year that the team missed the playoffs. The Spurs lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in the 9th vs. 10th seed play-in game. Those games do not technically count as postseason games, and as a result, this is the first time in franchise history that San Antonio failed to make the postseason in consecutive seasons.

It was a remarkable stretch for the Spurs, as there are teams who have missed the playoffs more times in the last decade than they have in the entirety of their franchise being in existence.

To stop that streak from reaching three, San Antonio needs some better luck in the injury department, as they were hammered by players being sidelined. The pieces are there for the Spurs to have a good offseason as well. They have a strong young core to build around and max cap space, so they have a legitimate chance to infuse some talent on this roster.

DeMar DeRozan’s free-agency will be one to keep an eye on for San Antonio, as the impending free agent is a big part of what they have done in the last few seasons. Will they be able to retain him? If not, those will be some big shoes to fill.
