The New York Knicks’ 2020-21 season ended disappointingly, as they were defeated by the Atlanta Hawks in their first-round matchup, 4-1. But, the season overall was a huge success. That will lead to an aggressive approach this offseason and pursuing a big man like Richaun Holmes could be at the top of their wishlist.

New York put themselves back on the map this season, as Leon Rose and William Wesley in the front office have combined with head coach Tom Thibodeau for a strong brain trust. Their first season working together resulted in a 41-31 regular season, the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference and a lot of optimism going forward.

The Knicks are in a great position to continue upgrading their roster. They have seven first-round draft picks in the next five years, 11 second-rounders in the next six, and a huge amount of cap space to spend this summer in free agency.

New York is likely to use some of that cap space to retain some of their free agents, as they have a multitude of players that will be hitting free agency this summer. Derrick Rose, Reggie Bullock, Nerlens Noel, Alec Burks, Taj Gibson, Elfrid Payton, and Frank Ntilikina all have expiring deals.

Figuring out who to keep among that group while adding some new talent to the roster will be a difficult balancing act, but we already have an idea of one player the team will be targeting. According to Ross Legion Hoops, Sacramento Kings center Richaun Holmes is expected to be pursued by New York this summer.

As the tweet states, Holmes is expected to have a robust market this offseason and rightfully so. Holmes broke out the last two seasons with the Kings, averaging 13.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 0.8 steals in 28.8 minutes per game.

While Holmes has earned a raise, it is peculiar that it could come from the Knicks. New York has a blossoming young center in Mitchell Robinson already on the roster and their free agent in Noel that many fans would like to see retained.

Being connected to one of the most sought-after big men on the market is surprising for the orange and blue. If they are going to make a splash with a big contract, the point guard position is where they should be spending those resources.
