Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

Getting Lauri Markkanen is definitely a strong move for the Dallas Mavericks, especially given his similarities in play with Kristpaps Porzingis and ability to knock down shots on the perimeter, but giving up Jalen Brunson and another young guard in Tyrell Terry may be too much to ask the Mavs to do.

Brunson has emerged as arguably the third-best player on the Mavericks this season and while he spent most of his time coming off-the-bench this year, he has played an integral part in their success. Between his scoring abilities and playmaking abilities, Brunson is definitely a guy who can work his way into the starting unit in a matter of time.

As for Tyrell Terry, the Mavericks were high on him when they drafted him, yet he was never really given an opportunity to play much on the court this year with him being out so long for personal reasons. With them having Trey Burke and the emergence of Jalen Brunson, there was no need to rush Terry into any action regardless of his availability.

Adding Markkanen is definitely an increase in overall offensive talent to the Mavericks roster, but they could definitely work out a better trade on their end where they could keep Jalen Brunson in the process.

If a sign-and-trade is being discussed for Markkanen, it means that he wants to play for Dallas, which would put them in the driver’s seat in terms of creating the terms of the deal. The Mavericks should pursue Lauri Markkanen, but not at the price of Jalen Brunson.
