Head coach James Borrego will return for his fourth season with the team
Back in 2018, the Charlotte Hornets hired James Borrego to be their head coach, signing him to a three-year deal with a fourth year option on his contract that the organization could pick up should they like the progress he has made as their head coach. Charlotte barely missed the playoffs in his first season as head coach and they barely missed the playoffs again this year, so the Hornets are giving him another chance and they have exercised the option for the fourth year of his contract.

While Borrego’s coaching record in Charlotte is 95-124 over the course of the last three seasons, he has spent a vast majority of the time developing the young players on this roster and helping this organization through a rebuilding process, so a 43.4% win percentage over that time is not bad at all.
Charlotte was hit hard by injuries and sick players this year, so not all of the blame can be put on Borrego for the Hornets missing the playoffs. Quite honestly, he deserves a lot of credit because playing with bench players and rotational guys late in the year instead of their star players, the Hornets were still able to win games and earn a spot in the play-in tournament.
This season was definitely viewed as a success by the Hornets’ front-office and as a result, they picked up the fourth year option on James Borrego’s contract. The 2021-22 season will definitely be a crucial year for Borrego and the Hornets to make the playoffs, but overall, he has done a great job as their head coach and will likely continue to coach this young team moving forward.
