Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?
When you first look at it, this trade seems like it does not make sense for the Celtics, but the more and more you think about it, Steven Adams would be a great addition for Boston. He is a bruiser in the paint and can give them exactly what they need — second chance opportunities.
Tristan Thompson can do that same thing and be a strong rebounder, but Adams is a better, more efficient rebounder than Thompson and has been doing it consistently for years now. Steven Adams is one of the best offensive rebounders in the NBA today and since the 2016-17 season, he has averaged over 3 offensive boards per game, including 5.1 offensive rebounds per game during the 2017-18 season.
Acquiring a player like Aaron Gordon or Nikola Vucevic at the trade deadline this past year would have been perfect for the Celtics, but after striking out on the possibility of adding a high-level scoring option in the frontcourt, going out and getting a monster rebounder is just as good in terms of offensive effectiveness.

With Kemba Walker, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown running things on the offensive-end of the court, the Boston Celtics do not really need more scorers, but they need guys who can compliment their All-Star trio.
Steven Adams can do just that because of his ability to create second-chance points and his ability to effectively rebound on both ends of the court. If the Celtics believe Thompson can do just as good of a job as Adams can, then they should absolutely keep Tristan Thompson, but if they do not think he can, then going after Adams makes a lot of sense.
