Trade Kemba Walker

Early on in the season, Kemba Walker missed a handful of games due to recovery from an offseason knee procedure and when he is on the court, he is a really effective player. Since joining the Celtics ahead of last season, he has averaged 19.7 points and 5.5 assists, but if they fail to reach the Eastern Conference Finals this season, then he will likely be the first guy to be on the move.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and two young, All-Star proven talents that are more than capable of winning a championship, but Boston will need to find that third All-Star talent that can play with them and help them get to the NBA Finals. Maybe Kemba Walker can be that guy if the Celtics had more of a bench, but trading him away gives the Celtics the ability to build a sustainable, high-level bench around Tatum and Brown.

While there may not be much of a market for Kemba in the offseason, there are still a handful of teams that should be interested in him and willing to trade one to two key role players and a possible future draft pick for the former All-Star point guard.

Trading Kemba Walker and the remaining $73.6M on his contract after this season would not only be a major financial relief for the Boston Celtics, but give them the ability to potentially be aggressive in free agency. If they took back half of Kemba’s salary in a trade, the Celtics would still have their Mid-Level Exception to potentially add another high-level talent to their roster.

With the emergence of rookie Payton Pritchard and Marcus Smart being under contract through next season, the Celtics could get away with trading Kemba Walker and still remain a championship/playoff contender in the East.

Tatum and Brown are not going anywhere, which is why if anybody is going to be on the move this offseason, it is Kemba Walker.
