Why This Trade Would Benefit The San Antonio Spurs
It was mentioned above that the San Antonio Spurs are not a win-now team. They are looking like a playoff contender with a record of 18-14 at the break, but they are not being taken seriously on a championship level. They have developed some young players that are going to be good for a long time and right now, that is what the team should be building around.
Players like Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson have broken out in a big way. This is why DeRozan and Aldridge could be moved sooner rather than later. The Spurs are not going to re-sign Aldridge and it would benefit them to get a return rather than letting him leave on his own.
They would land a replacement big in Daniel Theis, who could be used as a depth piece, along with prospect Aaron Nesmith. This deal seems like a good one for San Antonio because of the return they are getting for a player who is not a part of the future.
