Trade Scenario No. 1 – Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics Receive: F Kristaps Porzingis, F Wesley Iwundu

Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Marcus Smart, F/C Tristan Thompson, F Grant Williams, BOS 2021 1st Round Pick, OKC 2021 2nd Round Pick (via BOS), BOS 2023 1st Round Pick

It is no secret that the Boston Celtics could use a reliable frontcourt player and since they were interested in Porzingis when he was first traded to Dallas, they could still be interested in adding the Latvian big man.

It would cost them one of their key rotational guys in Marcus Smart, but the upside Porzingis could bring to the Celtics cannot be matched by any other player on the market. With Walker, Brown and Tatum all playing at an All-Star level, adding Porzingis to the mix gives the Celtics four star-caliber players to make a deep playoff push.

The Celtics have made the Eastern Conference Finals three of the last four seasons and have not been able to finally break through and make the NBA Finals. Adding Porzingis definitely gives them the firepower they need to compete with teams like the Nets and 76ers, but it also gives them a really strong chance to finally compete for a championship.

Getting Marcus Smart from the Celtics would be a huge addition for Dallas on both ends of the court and both Tristan Thompson and Grant Williams are solid role players. Obviously Smart would have the biggest impact for the Mavericks, but Thompson and Williams could be 15-20 minutes per game guys that can also impact the game on both ends of the court.

Ultimately, if the Mavericks are looking to get a fair amount of draft compensation in return for Porzingis, then the Celtics are definitely a potential trade partner for them. Not only do they get two first-round picks in this trade scenario, but they also get Oklahoma City’s second-round pick this season, which can be treated as a late first-round pick since it will likely be one of the first few picks in the second-round.

While they do not get as much immediate production to help them make a playoff run like the other two trade scenarios, Dallas does receive a large amount of draft compensation in this trade. Smart will definitely be a key role player should he be traded to Dallas, the only question that remains is if the Mavericks are interested in receiving more draft picks than role players.
