Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Miami Heat
Since the 2013-14 NBA season, DeMar DeRozan has averaged 20+ points per game over the course of a season and this year is no different. In 24 games with San Antonio, DeRozan is averaging 20.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.8 assists and is shooting 49.1% from the floor.
His overall playmaking abilities and leadership is what make him a superstar player and with another high-level facilitator in Jimmy Butler, the Miami Heat could be a very dangerous team, especially if they could keep shooters like Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson in a trade for DeMar DeRozan.
The Miami Heat do have a lot of scoring options and talent on their team, but at times, this team seems to get lost on the offensive end of the court, especially without Jimmy Butler. Adebayo can only do so much and both Herro and Robinson are nothing more than key role players for this organization.
Unless they go out and trade for another big name star, the Heat are going to continue to struggle on the offensive end of the court, which could lead to their demise and an early playoff exit this year, if they even make the playoffs at this rate!
Kelly Olynyk and Andre Iguodala are nothing more than role players for this team and while they definitely make a bigger impact than expected, getting DeRozan can replace both of their production and also add some to this Heat team.
Losing all the draft picks in this trade definitely would hurt the Heat long-term, especially since they are already thin in draft capital, but if they want to maximize their chances of winning now, this is what it will take. This front-office will really have to decide if building for the future or trying to win now is most important, which will be the deciding factor in a trade like this.
San Antonio will likely accept this trade offer, it is just a matter of if the Heat are willing to give up this much for DeRozan, who is in the final year of his contract. Trading for DeMar DeRozan will take a lot of stress off of Jimmy Butler to do everything for this team and would provide that spark the Heat need to be as efficient as possible on the offensive end of the court.
