Why This Trade Would Benefit The San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs have been a big surprise this season after missing the playoffs a year ago. They have some veteran names that could be on the move this offseason. DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge immediately come to mind. There is a boatload of young talent in San Antonio already along with the best coach in the league in Gregg Popovich.
Dejounte Murray leads the young talent along with Keldon Johnson, who is third on the team with 14.3 points per game. Just like the contract situation of DeRozan would work in the Warriors’ favor, it would benefit the Spurs to send him away.
It was obvious that he was going to opt into his player option, which is worth $27.7 million this season. The fact that DeRozan and the Spurs failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension suggests that his time in San Antonio may be running out after reaching NBA free agency.
San Antonio would be able to get that money off the books early in a trade. Also, there were NBA rumors of DeRozan being disgruntled in the offseason. It would make sense for the team to trade him before he is eligible to leave in free agency.
At least here they would be able to get something for him. Wiggins is an athletic wing that would fit in well with the rest of the youth in San Antonio. Wiggins has been unable to find a home in his career but Popovich could develop into something for the Spurs.
