Why This Trade Would Benefit The Detroit Pistons

It might not make sense to send your best player away normally but in the Detroit Pistons’ case, it is something that can help them. Jerami Grant is slated to make $63 million over the course of his contract. That is money going to one player that could be used elsewhere.

Detroit is not going to compete in these three years and has a lot of work to do to retool their roster. The Pistons recently sent Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks and Blake Griffin could be the next veteran on the move.

The front office in Detroit knows they will need to make some moves and Jerami Grant could be one that lands them a huge return at the NBA trade deadline. He isn’t a legitimate franchise player regardless of the statistical output and capitalizing on his trade value would help.

Detroit used the seventh-overall pick in the draft on point guard Killian Hayes. He will miss time with an injury and Smart will take over the position in his absence. Even when he returns, the duo if Hayes and Smart would be an upgrade. The veteran nature of Smart would help Hayes improve as a player.

In this particular deal, the Pistons would be getting a starting point guard, two players who would benefit from an extended role, and first-round draft capital. This seems like a win for a player on just a three-year deal. If Grant is available, many teams will be interested and it is up to Detroit to pick the right deal.
