Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Detroit Pistons

While it does not seem like the Detroit Pistons are getting the most out of trading Blake Griffin here, this trade is probably the best they could do for him as a result of not many teams wanting to pick up his mega-contract. As stated before, Griffin is owed over $75M for the next two seasons if he opts into his player option for the 2021-22 season and one of the only teams in the NBA that could trade for that kind of contract is the New York Knicks.

For the Pistons to continue bettering themselves for future success and building a young core for the future, then they need to trade Griffin sooner than later because his value now is likely as high as it will be.

Julius Randle is a sustainable talent that can be utilized by the Pistons for many years to come and the two draft picks they would be getting in return are extremely valuable to them in terms of their rebuild process.

It is expected that the Pistons once again will finish near the bottom of the NBA in the standings, but acquiring a proven young forward in Randle and draft assets could greatly improve them and have their rebuild ahead of schedule by a few years.

Holding on to Griffin and his mega-contract, especially if Detroit has no plans to include him in their long-term solution, makes zero sense and is why they should look to trade him.

The Pistons need draft picks moving forward and trading Griffin gives them the assets they need to finally build something special in Detroit.
