Why This Trade Makes Sense For The New York Knicks

It is no secret that the New York Knicks want to bring in a high-level, NBA NBA All-Star talent to lead their young core, which is why Kyle Lowry would be a great fit. R.J. Barrett, Obi Toppin, and Mitchell Robinson are the future of the Knicks and if they are to truly flip this franchise around and make the playoffs again, they need an NBA All-Star to lead them.

Last season in Toronto, Lowry averaged 19.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and shot 35.2% from three-point range. This was one of Lowry’s better statistical seasons in the NBA and he is on the back-half of his career.

The Knicks are in no position to win a championship, even with Lowry leading the charge, but with the few years he has left in his career, he can help lure more big names to New York and be the catalyst to changing the losing ways for the Knicks.

With Mitchell Robinson looking like a player who could be in the Knicks frontcourt for a longtime coming and after just drafting Obi Toppin 8th overall in this year’s draft, the Knicks youth could really benefit from Julius Randle being traded. While he has been their leader so far this year, trading him for Kyle Lowry makes a lot of sense for this organization’s future both player wise and financially.

Dennis Smith Jr. has no role with the Knicks right now in a crowded backcourt, which is why they would be keen to trade either him or Frank Ntilikina. New York also benefits from this trade greatly because they would not have to give up any draft picks in this trade package, as they would keep all three 2021 first-round picks they own.

If the Knicks are to bring in NBA All-Star levels talents via free agency and actually contend in the East once again, then they need to be willing to make a big move this season and acquiring Kyle Lowry would be that move. If this opportunity comes their way, they have to do everything they can to make sure Kyle Lowry is suiting up for them and stepping out on the court in Madison Square Garden for the foreseeable future.
