The Boston Celtics have been a team that has been linked to Blake Griffin for a while now. Over the years, trade rumors have surfaced about the Celtics possibly pursuing Griffin from the time he was with the Clippers, to now being with the Pistons.

While his contract would be tough for the Celtics to bring in, they could possibly make it work if they are willing to pay some taxes on this team to be a championship contender. Financially, the Celtics could make this trade work, but they would have to give up either Jaylen Brown or Marcus Smart.

Seeing as Brown is already having an All-Star like season, they would likely stray away from trading him any time soon, which would make Marcus Smart the guy that would have to be traded in order to get Griffin in Celtics’ green. Daniel Theis would obviously be involved in the trade as well since he is owed $5M this season and then they would probably have to send a younger player on a rookie contract like Romeo Langford.

A package of Smart, Theis, Langford and two to three draft picks could be exactly what it takes to bring Blake Griffin to Boston and could work out in the Celtics favor. Smart has been excellent over the years as a two-way player, but adding Griffin brings a whole new dimension to Boston’s offense.

Fully healthy, this team would be extremely dangerous as Walker, Brown, Tatum, and Griffin can all go for 20+ points on any given night. Not to mention, this team would be one of the better rebounding teams in the NBA as Tristan Thompson is still the anchor underneath controlling the boards.

If the opportunity arises, going out and trading for Blake Griffin would cost the Celtics’ ownership some money, but would make them even with some of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Griffin is a championship caliber player and pairing him with Kemba, Brown and Tatum gives the Celtics one heck of a starting lineup.
