Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Lakers
On the other side of the trade, the Lakers would be getting a massive upgrade at the starting point guard position. Dennis Schroder is a good player, but Malcolm Brogdon would be a perfect compliment to LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Brogdon has proven throughout his career that he is a point guard that does not necessarily need the ball in his hands. He thrived as a spot-up shooter alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo with Milwaukee. Last season, he proved that he can be a good scorer and a top-notch playmaker.
Yes, the Lakers would be giving up their newly-acquired point guard in Schroder and a good young piece in Kuzma. However, they are all about winning championships. This move could seriously help them towards that goal.
Los Angeles needs to focus on doing all they can to take pressure off of James. Brogdon can shoot the three, create his own shot, and create for teammates. His ability to flourish with the ball in his hands would help move LeBron off of the ball.
Add in a solid depth piece on the wing in Edmond Sumner and a 2021 first-round pick, and this trade looks more than acceptable. The deal would make a ton of sense if Schroder gets off to a slow start trying to figure out his role behind James and Davis.
Acquiring a piece like Brogdon would add a third star to the lineup and might be exactly what the Lakers need to repeat as NBA champions this season.
