Hawks could trade John Collins if contract talks are ‘far apart’

The Atlanta Hawks will be busy this NBA offseason with trying to build a winning team around Trae Young. Is it possible that John Collins could be on the move via trade?

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Hawks could gauge Collins’ value on the trade market if they are far apart in contract extension talks.

If the Hawks and Collins’ camp are far apart on an extension, it could open the door for Atlanta to gauge his value on the trade market.

Scotto added an important detail— stating how Collins’ representation will ‘seek a maximum contract extension’ in talks with the Hawks.

After averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds in consecutive seasons, Collins is eligible for an extension this offseason. Collins and his agents, Jeff Schwartz and Sean Kennedy of Excel Sports Management, will seek a maximum contract extension ideally.

If the Hawks aren’t willing to give Collins a maximum extension and his representation remains focused on that, it’s difficult to envision many teams around the NBA being eager to make a trade to acquire that. Atlanta has the cap space and continuity factor.

It will be fascinating to see if Collins would lower his desired compensation on his next contract if the Hawks were to include him trade discussions. It’s possible he could test free agency next NBA offseason to determine his market value.

John Collins is coming off a short yet impressive season for the Atlanta Hawks— posting averages of 21.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 41 appearances. He managed to build on his career-year that he put together in the 2018-19 NBA season.
